Willem Paerels (1878–1962) was born in Delft but settled in Belgium at a young age, where he became one of the most important representatives of Belgian Luminism. He drew inspiration from Impressionism and developed a personal style in which light, color, and a free brushstroke were central. Later, his work also showed influences of Fauvism and Modernism.

In addition to his paintings, Paerels produced a large number of drawings, watercolors, and graphic works. In these, he displays the same spontaneous observation and precise linework that also characterize his painting. Today, his works are held in various Belgian museums and important private collections.

Willem Paerels is considered one of the most significant artists in Belgian art of the first half of the twentieth century. His oeuvre remains beloved for its fresh, direct style and his exceptional sense of light, composition, and human presence.
