Description
Corneille, born in 1922 and died in 2010, was an influential painter and graphic artist who radically changed the Dutch art world in the 1950s. He was co-founder of the CoBrA movement in 1948, together with Karel Appel and Constant, among others. Although Corneille took drawing and etching courses at the Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam, he is mainly considered a self-taught painter. Initially strongly influenced by Picasso, his work evolved from abstract to a more figurative character in the late 1960s. Birds, women and flowers are recurring themes in his oeuvre.
Corneille (Guillaume Cornelis van Beverloo) took drawing and etching courses at the Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam between 1940 and 1942. He is best known as co-founder of the CoBrA movement, an influential group of artists who strove for spontaneous and experimental art. Corneille's works are appreciated and exhibited worldwide, and he is considered a key figure in post-war European art.
