Karel Appel (1921-2006) was a Dutch painter and sculptor, who was also a co-founder of the CoBrA art movement. His oeuvre is characterized by an expressive and colorful style. Appel started as an autodidact and soon developed a unique style, which he himself called the “Barbarian style”. In the 1950s he achieved international fame, with his works exhibited in renowned museums and galleries worldwide. In addition to painting and sculpture, Appel also created various monumental murals and sculptures. Karel Appel is considered one of the most influential Dutch artists of the 20th century.
