Ilya Kabakov is an American conceptual artist. Kabakov was born in Ukraine during the Soviet era and worked in Moscow for thirty years, until about the late 1980s. After moving to the United States, he settled on Long Island, where he now lives and works. Known for his fictional memoirs and drawings, Ilya Kabakov specializes in conceptual and neo-conceptual art styles. As a member of the contemporary art movement, he works with different materials. Although he started as an illustrator for children's books, he now mainly works with drawings and other work of mixed material. Ilya Kabakov's work is exhibited in galleries and permanent collections in Europe and the United States. One of Kabakov's specialties is his total installation pieces. He became known for these works in 1985 when he made “The Man Who Flew Into Space from his apartment”. These total installation pieces are a favorite among his followers and always attract a lot of viewers when on display.
