Martin R. Baeyens is a Belgian artist, born in 1943 in Melle. He is active as a painter, draftsman and graphic artist. He trained at Sint-Lucas and the Academy in Ghent from 1963 to 1968. In 1968 his style evolved from abstract to new figuration, in which the human figure became central. In 1975 he developed a new view of the landscape. He collaborated on the Suraci project in Brittany (1975) and the Maze project (1977). According to the press from 1979, Baeyens depicts a chaotic, untouched nature (with rocks and planes), in which he integrates geometric structures; this is reminiscent of aerial photographs of airports and signals. In 1968 he became a teacher at the Academy in Ghent and in 1973 he co-founded the Hoest Arts Movement (HAM). His work is mentioned in BAS I and “Two centuries of signatures of Belgian artists” (Piron).
