Antoni Tàpies was an influential Catalan artist, born in Barcelona in 1923. His work is known for its rich texture, abstract forms and use of unconventional materials. He drew inspiration from Eastern philosophy, spirituality and everyday life. A pioneer of matter painting and abstract imagery, Tàpies is internationally recognised as one of Spain's most important post-war artists. His work is included in collections including those of the MoMA (New York), Centre Pompidou (Paris) and Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid).
